Becoming a Pilot with Medical Conditions

by Devin

The great news is yes you can become a pilot even if you have medical conditions.  The FAA allows for many medical conditions, the only thing you need to be able to do is show your issue won’t in-danger you.  They even allow you to fly while taking anti-depressant medication or are color blind.

Now the process of becoming a pilot especially a professional pilot with medical conditions will require a bit more work on your part.  You will need to contact your local FAA Medical examiner and find out what types of test and documentation they will need to approve your situation.  Often times this is a letter from your treating doctor about the issue and maybe tests to show the extent of restrictions.  This may cost you some extra money but in the end when you look at the cost of flight training it will be minimal.

When the FAA issue you a medical certificate it will more than likely contain some type of restriction.  This is very normal, mine even has a restriction on it, requiring I wear corrective lenses when flying.

As a professional pilot some restrictions may be more challenging than others, however, all airlines only require you to have a first class medical.  Just be ready to answer questions and show documentation at interviews.  Always keep a positive stance on the medical condition.  Your abilities and experience will matter more to the airlines than anything else.
